Saarinen + Kahlo
Rooted in the landscape.
For this project, we were tasked with designing a piece of furniture based on two benchmarks of the design world: Frida Kahlo and Eero Saarinen.
The concept of landscape hints at an ideal; at something that could be, at something we are, and at something that has been. Kahlo portrays it in her paintings — through her backgrounds which express her deepest emotions, her relationship with them, and those around her. Saarinen incorporates the landscape as a central element in his works, trying always to "build towards a whole."
... and reimagining the landscape.
The essence behind creating this product lay in understanding the intricate relationship between a piece of furniture and its environment. Rather than viewing it as isolated, we perceived it as part of a constellation of objects, each contributing to the creation of a desired atmosphere. In this way, we came up with a solution that echoed Saarinen's perception (and incorporation) of nature within manmade creations, while embracing Kahlo's relentless pursuit of expression through art and aesthetics.
