Eggquilibirio
From shell to substance.
Our brief for this project was to develop and test a biomaterial from a type of food residue of our choice, then create a toy out of our new material and its material properties. Our material of choice were eggshells, due to its abundance in almost every household in Europe, their inexpensive sourcing, and unique properties.
Material properties.
Our material is a composite created from eggshells, pectin, glycerin and food dye. These can easily be broken down into simpler elements, allowing for a virtuous life cycle of the material and the product itself.
Through material tinkering and engineering, our material redefines waste; turning it into a resource that bridges the natural and the crafted. By giving new life to discarded shells, we propose innovative design possibilities, from sustainable products to tactile and intriguing creations. Its a material that embodies reinvention, offering a unique blend of utility, beauty and respect for the environment.
Waste made wonder.
Eggquilibrio is the outcome of a hands-on exploration into repurposing eggshells, a material we encounter daily yet often overlook as mere waste. By studying their properties and potential uses, we developed a biomaterial that balances functionality with sustainability.
We not only address practical needs but also uncover the hidden value of the material, creating something that reflects a deeper connection between human innovation and natural systems.
How can we reimagine waste to coexist more thoughtfully with nature?
