An ode to Cagliari

Overview.

Set in the heart of Cagliari, Palazzo Tirso is a historic landmark whose architecture speaks in the language of monumentality - a visual and spatial dialogue that represents the city's identity and heritage. The redesign focuses on translating this quality into a contemporary setting, drawing from the building's weight of history while engaging with the surrounding Mediterranean landscape. This project seeks to become both a tribute and a reinterpretation.

The challenge.

The luxury travel landscape is shifting, experiences now hold more value than formality, and authenticity has become the currency of choice. In this context, the hotel room is no longer just a backdrop but an active participant in the guest's journey. This meant considering unconventional angles, exploring the psychology of space, the emotional responses it can trigger, and the potential for a hotel room to act like a piece of art; not just a container, but a composition. The challenge was to align spatial design with a sense of place that feels both intimate and rooted in culture.

Modernity tells of tradition.

The existing design language of monumentality provided a structural backbone, but I sought a lighter touch, one that allowed history to resonate without becoming static. The concept, echoes in stone and wind, speaks of spaces informed by wind-sculpted forms and limestone permanence, where texture, light and materiality mirror the Mediterranean's rhythm. Functionality remains as the main complexity, as every element in a hotel room must earn its place. The result is a spatial composition that grounds the guest while inviting a sense of openness in each space, where monumentality is amplified rather than replaced.
